Shiatsu Acupressure Massage

A deeply therapeutic and relaxing massage

using ancient wisdom and practice to relieve the stresses and strains

of our modern lives

What is Shiatsu Acupressure Massage ?

A simple Japanese word meaning "finger pressure" ' Shiatsu' is the name coined earlier this century to describe this increasingly distinguished form of therapeutic massage and healing.

Massage, acupuncture, moxibustion and herbalism, had for centuries been the component parts of Traditional Chinese Medicine. As Traditional Chinese Medicine moved into Japan 'Shiatsu' developed and took on its own form as both a treatment of natural medicine and therapeutic respite.

What Does Shiatsu Treatment Involve?

Skilled touch, movement and stretches are applied to various parts of the body which correspond with acupressure points and energy lines (meridians). Like acupuncture, Shiatsu works by rebalancing the body's vital energy flow in order to promote calm, relaxation, good health and treat conditions of illness injury, and stress.

Shiatsu practitioners train for years

to read, deduce and treat

the nature of the vital energy of the body through touch.

Although energy (Ki) is present everywhere in the body, there are many places where it accumulates (acupressure points) or flows in lines (meridians) near the surface. In stress and illness this energy appears as disturbed or blocked and can present as symptoms as physical pain, headaches, mood swings, fatigue, mobility problems etc. Such conditions, and more internal ones, can be relieved by applying specific touch, massage, movement and stretches to these energy lines and points and corresponding areas.

Treatments - Traditional and Modern

Traditional: full body, clothed

For traditional shiatsu treatment it is best to wear loose comfortable clothing such as a track or jogging suit and treatment takes place either on a Japanese shiatsu futon (padded surface at floor level) or western style massage couch.

Modern: back, neck & shoulders with relaxing therapeutic oils

For 'stress busting' back, neck and shoulder treatments relaxing therapeutic oils are applied directly to the upper body. Here your upper body will be discretely unclothed and treatment takes place on a western massage couch.ntion is better tan cure

Regular treatments are recommend to ensure that your body maintains

a healthy balance in all aspects of its daily functioning.

Because an imbalance of Ki in the body always precedes the overt symptoms of injury and disease, all aspects of Oriental medicine have a preventative role. However, their suitability to treat specific diseases is of paramount importance and often appropriate to be treated by Shiatsu.

During a course of Shiatsu treatment most patients feel physical changes as the body relaxes and balances itself. These may include a brief period of stiffness or tiredness, but more often the feelings will be reduction in pain, improved mobility and vitality, relief from stress, and the undeniable feeling of well-being.

Sometimes the first benefits to occur do not improve the main complaint, but rather overall health, and well being. For example, underlying energetic balance and detoxing functions may have to be improved before specific overt symptom conditions can be relieved.

Shiatsu affects all levels of our being,

the physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual:

The level of treatment is attuned to the individual’s personal state of

health, energetic balance and desired outcome.
